"Consider the positive influence you aspire to have as someone living with cystic fibrosis. How do you hope to inspire and empower future generations of young adults with chronic illnesses?"

I have been both cursed and blessed by Cystic Fibrosis ("CF"). Yes, I have endured a lifetime of daily treatments and medicines along the way, but I am one of the lucky ones with CF. The miracle modulator drug became available for me at the age where even relatively healthy CF patients start losing the battle against this progressive disease. As miraculous as this modulator is for me, it does not address all the issues caused by CF or all mutations that cause the disease. The miracles of modern medicine have allowed me to live a normal, healthy life that includes playing varsity baseball, enjoying time with family and friends, and pursuing academic accomplishments. I realize how fortunate I am for my health and happiness, and this fuels my drive to use my academic gifts to help others. I have been accepted to the University of Rochester and will major in Biochemistry. My career goals are not fully defined yet, but I am confident that my path will lead to either a medical research role or a medical doctor. I plan to get a Bachelor of Science and then continue my education with either a Masters in Biochemistry or enroll in medical school. I want to use my education and aptitude in science and math to research new drugs and therapies for patients with genetic diseases. At the University of Rochester, I hope to work with Professor David Dean on gene therapy and use Rochester's curriculum flexibility to enhance my communication skills to further advocate for patients. My success will be defined by successfully completing Biochemistry degree(s) but also by my attitude and appreciation for what I can achieve along the way. I have been blessed by modern advances in medicine, a strong family and community who supported me along my CF journey and a strong, curious mind that's driven by learning. I will pursue my career goals with a smile of my face, treating people well along the way while being fiercely competitive and driven in my pursuits. While pursuing my degree in the medical field, I plan to remain active in the CF community by attending fundraising events, working with others on advocacy initiatives and being a role model to younger CF patients on what you can achieve with hard work, resilience, and hope in the future.
