"Consider the positive influence you aspire to have as someone living with cystic fibrosis. How do you hope to inspire and empower future generations of young adults with chronic illnesses?"
Living with a mild version of cystic fibrosis has shaped my life in many ways. As a sophomore studying fine art, specializing in painting, and playing on our university's varsity soccer team, my days involve balancing treatments, classes, and practice. CF means extra care and daily medication, but it has also taught me resilience and determination. My mornings start with breathing treatments and medications, but by the time I'm in the art studio or out on the soccer field, I'm completely focused. Painting helps me express my feelings and experiences. My creative presentation painting titled "Last Breath", captures the complex beauty of living with CF. This past spring semester, I hosted my first art show, using my paintings to tell my story. Soccer, on the other hand, lets me push myself physically and mentally. Scoring goals and performing my best remind me that CF doesn't have to define my limits. When I was younger, I didn't have many role models who openly balanced chronic illnesses with big dreams. Now, I want to be that person for someone else. I hope other young adults living with conditions like mine can see they can pursue their passions, whether in art, sports, academics, or anything else. Facing challenges head-on doesn't mean ignoring difficulties; it means not letting them control your life. Empowering others is important to me. I'd love to mentor high school students with chronic illnesses, helping them navigate college applications or simply offering support during tough times. I've also considered creating an online community on platforms like TikTok, providing a space to share experiences, give advice, and support each other through highs and lows. Additionally, I hope to speak at events, sharing my story so others know they're not alone. Building this community would mean lifting each other up and celebrating our achievements together. Ultimately, I want future generations to realize that a chronic illness isn't a barrier but simply one part of who they are. I hope they can look at me, a painter and varsity soccer player living with CF, and feel encouraged to pursue their own dreams. My life isn't perfect, but it's authentic and fulfilling. That's the legacy I aspire to leave behind, one that motivates young adults with chronic illnesses to dream boldly, persevere, and create something incredible.
