"Consider the positive influence you aspire to have as someone living with cystic fibrosis. How do you hope to inspire and empower future generations of young adults with chronic illnesses?"
When I was diagnosed with CF at three weeks old, my parents had no idea what future awaited me. They were told that my condition could have serious impacts on the life I was able to lead. My parents envisioned a future in which I might not be able to run, play, or even attend college. While technology and medicine have advanced since then, making the possibility of a full and active life more realistic, there is still a large amount of uncertainty and fear that comes with a diagnosis of CF. I want my story to provide hope for patients with CF and their families. I know that throughout my life, my parents have been a resource to other parents dealing with a new diagnosis of CF for their children. At 18, I want to take over that role as an advocate. I want to tell people that the child my parents were afraid wouldn't be able to run and play ended up becoming a long distance runner, winning state-level medals and running half marathons. She graduated from high school with honors and is heading to college four hours away from home. She has a close circle of friends that she loves spending time with. She goes to concerts and football games, and loves being on the water. I prioritize my health because I know it is a gift. I am not defined by my CF, but nor do I ignore it. I am so lucky to have been born at a time when robust medical technology and research continue to improve the prognosis for people living with chronic illnesses, and I also try to do my part through nutrition, exercise and rest. I want to serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment to young adults with CF and their families by continuing to live intentionally and fully. I wish my parents, newly informed about my diagnosis, could have seen 18 years into the future and known what a beautiful life I would have. While that's not possible, I can be an example of hope for others in a similar uncertain situation.
